How to care for your fresh flowers
Ever wanted to know how to keep your fresh arrangement for lasting longer than the typical 3 days? I'm here to tell you as a florist, it's pretty simple...
Tip # 1. Put those blooms in water as soon as possible! water is life for flowers, the longer they stay out of the water the faster they will wilt and becomes...brown blooms.
Tip #2: Always use a clean container, a dirty container will encourage bacteria growth which will shorten our flowers lifespan. Use fresh warm water mixed with flowers food when placing flowers in the vase, make sure to remove any foliage that will be submerged under water. This will encourage bacteria to grow and we do not want that.
Tip #3: Do not place your beautiful arrangement in direct sunlight, in a draft area or next to the heater, flowers do not like heat or direct sun, the heat will make the flowers get dehydrated faster.
Tip #4: Whenever possible, buy local flowers that are native to your state. These tend to last longer and more unique looking. You can find these blooms at your local farmer markets.
Tip #5: Keep your arrangement in a cool spot, in the middle of your living room, kitchen or on your bedside table which is my favorite spot to have flowers. You can smell and see them as soon as you wake up, how awesome is that?
Tip #6: For sunflowers, hydrangeas, poppies, roses or dahlias the stems need to be shocked into drinking the water due to the structure of the cells in the stems. This technique called "scalding". First, you put a fresh cut at the bottom of the stem, just take about 1 inch off the stems, then dip the stem into about 2 inches of boiling water for 20 secs and then place them into the fresh water vase. This will guarantee your flowers will stay a lot fresher, longer! the process helps the cells open up and drink more water.
Tip #7: Change the water in the vase every 2-3 days especially when it gets cloudy, that's a sign your flowers need new water.
Tip #8; If your water came in a container with foam, add a bit of water to the foam every day to ensure the flowers are getting enough hydration.
Tip #9: Always buy flowers for yourself if the mood strikes, it's good for the mind and spirit without any guilty calories.
Tip #10: If you're having a grand old event, contact me and I will make magic happen for you, this is my passion and it's what I do best! If you are also a fellow florist, drop me a line, I would love to make new flowers friends.
